Been a busy couple weeks for me, although nothing as exciting as Chriss facial hair has gone on. I ran another 5K about 2 weeks ago and improved greatly. My, almost joking, goal was under 25 minutes (I had ran over 27 min last time). Well I got pretty close, finishing in 25:08. So next time I better go for under 25 for real.
Went camping over Memorial Day with Katie, Jon, Jons niece Rachel, Shelley, and Molly the dog. Just spent the first night setting up camp and had a great steak dinner with fixins made by Katie. Next day we got up early and headed out to do some hiking. Ended up doing the Colbert Ridge Trail which was 3.8 miles up to Deep Gap (a little north of Mt Mitchell). Great fun and a perfect day for it.
Family has come to town so I must run to be social with them. Cousin Amy and her husband Michael and son Jack are in town as well as G&G Schager. Till whenever I remember again |

Well here I am in Athens for Adams graduation. Long trip but at least now I dont have to get up early tomorrow. Live after 5 was a lot of fun after work today, more so for the crowd of people and the beers than the band but its all good. I was almost killed today by the wind but Ill tell more later. Gotta sleep. And yes I will get Kirks balloon pictures up here. Later |

Same old, same old going on but at least the weather is getting warmer. Hello May, welcome to the calendar. Busy couple of weeks coming up here, May and June are completely filled with things to do, and places to go. Mother's Day, Mom's Birthday, Sister's Birthday, Cousin's graduation, Brother's Graduation Sister's Graduation, Father's Day, Jon's Wedding, I'm just glad Memorial Day is squeezed in there so I can have one loooooong weekend outside, where it better be warm and not in the low 50s, high 40s like it felt like the other day. That was crazy.
Raleigh was good fun, I was up there a couple weeks ago for Pig Pickin - a Pi Kappa Phi alumni event/tradition, and not only did I get to catch up with some of the kids from college but I also got the chance to assemble the worst team is the Golf Tournament's history for 18 holes of best ball where, I believe, we still managed to shoot 9 over par (remember, every shot, we're taking the best shot of of four tries). I blame the beer. But my poor golf skills probably had something to do with it as well.
Picked up a new cell phone around the same time, Verizon & LG's "The V" which is a great phone that flips open & includes a QWERTY keyboard. So, if you recall those short blurbs from the airport on my trip to Utah, it'll be much easier to post longer messages from this phone. Internet access, good screen that displayed video and pics very well. Also takes the videos and pics well. It has my seal of approval.
Speaking of things with my seal of approval, I will mention it now, come back later, and post some pictures for you all, but Mr. Kirk Ward was out of town these past couple weeks, so, In celebration of his return on the 5th, a few of us got together on the 3rd (that being me, Angie, Bo, Angela, Shelley, Jon, Katie and Chris) and, having previously purchased about 350 balloons, proceeded to blow them all up and toss them into Kirks room. Some of the "Balloon drifts" would have come up to a person's waist. Alas, my dream of getting them up to Kirk's neck level didn't come true, but these things happen. Pics to come.
Not too much else, other than to head back to the Apartment, kick back and relax after a hard days work. I'll be headed to Georgia this weekend for Adam's graduation, so perhaps I'll try out the posting from the road option with the new phone. Peace. |

Dear Viewer,
Thank you for your correspondence regarding the "South Park" episodes entitled "Cartoon Wars." We appreciate your concerns about censorship and the destructive influence of outside groups on the media, entertainment industry and particularly Comedy Central.
To reiterate, as satirists, we believe that it is our First Amendment right to poke fun at any and all people, groups, organizations and religions and we will continue to defend that right. Our goal is to make people laugh and perhaps, if we're lucky, even make them think in the process.
Comedy Central's belief in the First Amendment has not wavered, despite our decision not to air an image of Muhammad. Our decision was made not to mute the voices of Trey and Matt or because we value one religion over any other. This decision was based solely on concern for public safety in light of recent world events.
With the power of freedom of speech and expression also comes the obligation to use that power in a responsible way. Much as we wish it weren't the case, times have changed and, as witnessed by the intense and deadly reaction to the publication of the Danish cartoons, decisions cannot be made in a vacuum without considering what impact they may have on innocent individuals around the globe.
It was with this in mind we decided not to air the image of Muhammad, a decision similar to that made by virtually every single media outlet across the country earlier this year when they each determined that it was not prudent or in the interest of safety to reproduce the controversial Danish cartoons. Injuries occurred and lives were lost in the riots set off by the original publication of these cartoons. The American media made a decision then, as we did now, not to put the safety and well being of the public at risk, here or abroad.
As a viewer of "South Park," you know that over the course of ten seasons and almost 150 episodes the series has addressed all types of sensitive, hot-button issues, religious and political, and has done so with Comedy Central's full support in every instance, including this one. "Cartoon Wars" contained a very important message, one that Trey and Matt felt strongly about, as did we at the network, which is why we gave them carte blanche in every facet but one: we would not broadcast a portrayal of Muhammad.
In that regard, did we censor the show? Yes, we did. But if you hold Comedy Central's 15-year track record up against any other network out there, you'll find that we afford our talent the most creative freedom and provide a nurturing atmosphere that challenges them to be bold and daring and places them in a position to constantly break barriers and push the envelope. The result has been some of the most provocative television ever produced.
We would like nothing more than to be able to look back at this in a few years and think that perhaps we overreacted. Unfortunately, to have made a different decision and to look back and see that we completely underestimated the damage that resulted was a risk we were not willing to take.
Our pledge to you, our loyal viewers, is that Comedy Central will continue to produce and provide the best comedy available and we will continue to push it right to the edge, using and defending the First Amendment in the most responsible way we know how.
Sincerely, Comedy Central Viewer Services |

Getting this out there quickly, but I just finished tonights episode. And, as expected, Comedy Central gave in to their worries about airing an image of Muhummad (sp?) and censored it out (it should be noted that in the cut scene, the guy was just standing there, handing a football helmet to Peter of the Family Guy cartoon). To make their cast, Trey, Matt and the South Park folks ran a "retaliation cartoon" written by the terrorists showing Americans, George Bush and Jesus dancing around and crapping on each other and an American Flag.
All or nothing, Comedy Central.
South Park this season has been as brilliant as ever and tonight's episode about free speech hopefully put a good spin on things. If you want to join me, I'm not watching any more Comedy Central shows in an effort to see if, enough people complain to the network as I did, that they might actually air the episode (although I'll still catch South Park). I know that's highly unlikly, but oh well.
Now, time to watch the Tivo'd episode of Lost....Current Mood: frustrated

Bush's connections to the Leak that led to Valerie Plame's ousting... now I see this...
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060410/ap_on_go_pr_wh/election_phone_jamming
WASHINGTON - Key figures in a phone-jamming scheme designed to keep New Hampshire Democrats from voting in 2002 had regular contact with the White House and Republican Party as the plan was unfolding, phone records introduced in criminal court show.
The records show that Bush campaign operative James Tobin, who recently was convicted in the case, made two dozen calls to the White House within a three-day period around Election Day 2002 — as the phone jamming operation was finalized, carried out and then abruptly shut down.
The national Republican Party, which paid millions in legal bills to defend Tobin, says the contacts involved routine election business and that it was "preposterous" to suggest the calls involved phone jamming.
The Justice Department has secured three convictions in the case but hasn't accused any White House or national Republican officials of wrongdoing, nor made any allegations suggesting party officials outside New Hampshire were involved. The phone records of calls to the White House were exhibits in Tobin's trial but prosecutors did not make them part of their case.
Democrats plan to ask a federal judge Tuesday to order GOP and White House officials to answer questions about the phone jamming in a civil lawsuit alleging voter fraud.
Repeated hang-up calls that jammed telephone lines at a Democratic get-out-the-vote center occurred in a Senate race in which Republican John Sununu defeated Democrat Jeanne Shaheen, 51 percent to 46 percent, on Nov. 5, 2002.
Besides the conviction of Tobin, the Republicans' New England regional director, prosecutors negotiated two plea bargains: one with a New Hampshire Republican Party official and another with the owner of a telemarketing firm involved in the scheme. The owner of the subcontractor firm whose employees made the hang-up calls is under indictment.
The phone records show that most calls to the White House were from Tobin, who became President Bush's presidential campaign chairman for the New England region in 2004. Other calls from New Hampshire senatorial campaign offices to the White House could have been made by a number of people.
A GOP campaign consultant in 2002, Jayne Millerick, made a 17-minute call to the White House on Election Day, but said in an interview she did not recall the subject. Millerick, who later became the New Hampshire GOP chairwoman, said in an interview she did not learn of the jamming until after the election.
A Democratic analysis of phone records introduced at Tobin's criminal trial show he made 115 outgoing calls — mostly to the same number in the White House political affairs office — between Sept. 17 and Nov. 22, 2002. Two dozen of the calls were made from 9:28 a.m. the day before the election through 2:17 a.m. the night after the voting.
There also were other calls between Republican officials during the period that the scheme was hatched and canceled.
Prosecutors did not need the White House calls to convict Tobin and negotiate the two guilty pleas.
Whatever the reason for not using the White House records, prosecutors "tried a very narrow case," said Paul Twomey, who represented the Democratic Party in the criminal and civil cases. The Justice Department did not say why the White House records were not used.
The Democrats said in their civil case motion that they were entitled to know the purpose of the calls to government offices "at the time of the planning and implementation of the phone-jamming conspiracy ... and the timing of the phone calls made by Mr. Tobin on Election Day."
While national Republican officials have said they deplore such operations, the Republican National Committee said it paid for Tobin's defense because he is a longtime supporter and told officials he had committed no crime.
By Nov. 4, 2002, the Monday before the election, an Idaho firm was hired to make the hang-up calls. The Republican state chairman at the time, John Dowd, said in an interview he learned of the scheme that day and tried to stop it.
Dowd, who blamed an aide for devising the scheme without his knowledge, contended that the jamming began on Election Day despite his efforts. A police report confirmed the Manchester Professional Fire Fighters Association reported the hang-up calls began about 7:15 a.m. and continued for about two hours. The association was offering rides to the polls.
Virtually all the calls to the White House went to the same number, which currently rings inside the political affairs office. In 2002, White House political affairs was led by now-RNC chairman Ken Mehlman. The White House declined to say which staffer was assigned that phone number in 2002.
"As policy, we don't discuss ongoing legal proceedings within the courts," White House spokesman Ken Lisaius said.
Robert Kelner, a Washington lawyer representing the Republican National Committee in the civil litigation, said there was no connection between the phone jamming operation and the calls to the White House and party officials.
"On Election Day, as anybody involved in politics knows, there's a tremendous volume of calls between political operatives in the field and political operatives in Washington," Kelner said.
"If all you're pointing out is calls between Republican National Committee regional political officials and the White House political office on Election Day, you're pointing out nothing that hasn't been true on every Election Day," he said.

| » Springin It Up |
I think we can officially declare now that Spring is here. Finally started to rake all the leaves that fell this fall on our back porch, and soon, I might actually clean off the patio furniture, clean off the grill, and enjoy being outside. Sadly, pools don't upen up until Memorial Day weekend which seems kinda far away. Carolina Cup was excellent and when I stop being lazy, I have pictures of that and the skiing trip to Utah to post online. It's good stuff.
For now, here's some fun stuff
http://www.qwantz.com/posterchild/ - Via, Bo, I think, I heard that some girls got arrested in Ohio for staging a Real-Life Mario Bros. game. Apparently, putting question mark boxes all around town led to terrorized Ohioans (is that right?) calling the police in the believe that the evil terrorists had a beef with Ravenna, OH. Terrorism. In Ravenna. Which, according to the good old Wikipedia: "as of the 2000 census had a total population of 11,771". Anyhow, I find the whole idea interesting....
http://www.thebrushback.com/mockdraft.htm - Thanks to Kirk, apparently thebrushback.com does for sports what The Onion does for news. In fact, I think the website author stole the exact same page design from The Onion. No matter, this mock draft for the upcoming NFL draft is faaaaantastic. Kirk claims he almost laughed out loud at work, which would have been great if it had happened.

Annnnnnnnnd, two days straight. How about that? Things going pretty well. I snagged a Seersucker Jacket for the Carolina Cup next Saturday off ebay last night and Katie (Kohler) came over after work yesterday so I could fix up her MP3 player, mostly just rip songs off her CDs so she could add them on. This had to be done, of course, because the rest of my family will eat a computer alive. My Dad, very recently, maybe... January? Bought the family a new computer cause they had the old one for about 1,000 years. And the one good thing about the older computer is that it was built like a tank. Not too much software, very basic and no one wanted to download new things to put on it because it was way too low tech for that. Now, I go over there, take one look at the mess of applications and MP3 downloading programs my sister has put on there and I just shake my head. Ever her Dell DJ, she was in the process of mucking that up. Apparently, when she first got it, she was able to link the MP3 player to the computer and she put on all the songs from the computer. When I went over there last week to add more for her, it wouldn't recognize the MP3 player. When I got it to my place, it recognized it just fine and I noticed, she had clips of songs that aborted after only a few seconds of downloading, non-MP3 files, it was a mess. The files she did have were in disarray. It was nuts. I can't deal with disorganization when it comes to the files on my computer. Which is funny if you've ever seen my room. Anyhow, I fixed up the files she had on there, showed her how to add more files to her MP3 player and how to organize them so she knows what she has. Should be good.
Tonight, possibly some bowling, although something else could always pop up, especially since people haven't been enthusiastic about responding to my "Do you want to go bowling?" proposition. I also need to pack for the trip to Utah, but that should only take me about, what... 10-15 minutes? I'm a light packer.
Anyhow, the flight is out between 6-7AM Thursday morning, so, besides maybe a short text message update, I'll be back Monday evening to talk about the skiing. Later.

| » Hey, I remember now! |
Man, and to think that I had forgotten that all I really had to do was write up an e-mail to get this thing updated. Who would have thought? Well, at work currently, and waiting for that clock to get to about 5:00... gonna be awhile. But everything is going pretty well. Had an excellent St. Patrick's Day, started out, of course, by going to the store for some Guiness, this time I went for the 8 pack of cans instead of the bottles. It just tastes better. Then people headed over to Bo's to watch the NCAA Tournament. Good news, State won, bad news, of course, is that they are now out and they were kicked out of the tournament quite unceremoniously by Texas. No matter. Anyhow, drank the Guiness, ate a burger and then caught a ride to Sir Edmund Haley's where I ordered a yard of Guiness, only to find out they don't serve yard of beer on St. Patrick's Day (Whaaaaaaaaaaat????). So, instead, I ordered a regular one and listened to the soothing music of the bagpipe player who was conveniently places about one foot from our table. You couldn't hear much else besides bagpipes. I think we got him to move though by continually asking for him to play Danny Boy & banging on the table in an attempt to be on beat (even though on out state, I'm sure we were waaaay off). At any rate, a good evening. Not a great morning afterwards, I think mostly due to a poor decision to have a shot - Three Wise Men (it tasted more like the Three Wise Men's illegitimate children).
Had an interview last week on Wednesday for an opening on Jon Harding's team, I thought it went pretty well, and I tried to play up my tech skills. We shall see if I managed to convince anyone that I would be a good fit. I hope so, cause I think it'd work pretty well.
In other news, it's gonna to be busy for me these next few weeks... Check this out: March 23-27, I'll be in Utah skiing with my Dad (equals a 3-day work week), brother, Uncle Chip and cousin John. April 1st I'm going to the Carolina Cup (which has just reminded me that I need to drop off my check in the mail this afternoon) down in South Carolina. April 8th is Mr. Jon Hassell's engagement party, which I'll be attending, April 19th is my Dad's birthday, so I'm sure we'll get into something around that time, April 21-23 I'll be in Raleigh for the PKP Alumni event and, although it's a bit of an outlier, May 13th is my brother's Graduation. So, if you want a piece of my time, you better book it soon, cause time is running out fast.
Also heard from an old friend of mine, Jake Gilliam, from back in the day when I roamed the dangerous streets of Brentwood, TN. It was pretty rough there, what with all the gang activity and whatnot. I'm glad to hear he made it out of the ghetto alive as well and is now piloting planes (I think he said Delta, headed to Atlanta) despite the fact that he is completely blind. It's a fantastic story of triumph over adversity and I am sure that James Frey would buy my story and write about those rough and tumble days in the hood.
Well, now that I've remembered this, perhaps I'll be able to update a little more frequently. But you never know, hope you all have a good one. Oh, and don't worry, Delta flyers. Jake isn't blind, just narcoleptic. But that's what co-pilots are for.

Aaaaaaaaand finishing, in 185th place, Jay Kohler! Well, 185th out of 320 men. Lets face it, I was never going out to run that 5K today to finish first. Yet, I still accomplished the said task, even after going out last night & having a few glasses of wine. Woke up at 6, has a little to eat and got ready to head uptown.
There were a ton of people, and getting my "Champion Chip" (An electric tracker you put on your shoe to get your official time) was a bit of a hassle, but at least I registered early enough as opposed to the poor souls (Shelly) who had to wait in line.
We couldn't find Jon before the start of the race, so Shelly and I ran and chatted for the first mile before I headed off on my own. Even though I had run this course once before, I got confused and mixed up and didn't know how much farther I had to go. All of a sudden, I found myself near the end at the 3 mile mark (with only a tenth of a mile left) so I went all out a lot later than I had wanted. Even so, I'm proud of the fact I got up, got out and didn't ever stop to walk once during the race. I think I'll have to try that again in the near future.
Other stats (and, yes, I know they aren't good) I was 9 of 12 in the 20-24 male age group, out of men and women, I finished 255 out of 611 (yes, only beat by 70 girls, woo hoo!) however, I wonder if some of those stats are accurate now that I look closer... I think there are a few errors over at
http://www.runforyourlife.com/2006_RACES/uptown_ymca_corporate_cup_5k.htm
Anyhow, the most important time is my 5K time, which was 27:42. So, next time, perhaps I'll shoot for a sub-27 minute number.

| » Messing Around on the New Computer |
Ahhhh, the Dell got here on Thursday and so far, no problems whatsoever... with the new computer. The old one is giving me FITS. I thought it'd be simple, once I got the new computer set up, to either:
A) Move the hard drive from the old computer to the new one & transfer files that way B) Reinstall windows & use my USB flash drive to transfer files over C) Reinstall windows & create a network and transfer files that way (either via ethernet or simply using a crossover cable)
Well, A went out the window, cause the HD connectors are much newer than my old school computer and they pins don't match up.
B and C would be possible if Windows would JUST FREAKIN' INSTALL. Seriously, I've tried XP several times, no dice. I went back, got Win98 to install, but I couldn't get it set up to transfer over a network. Then, I got XP to go all the way though installation, but on reboot, it won't load windows & just keeps repeating. I'm about to call it a wash, which would suck, cause my backup CDs are a couple years old. I'm gonna give it one last ditch shot later on, either tonight or this weekend, as Jon might have an alternative OS I can put on here to get this thing working.
Other than that, I will have to focus on watching the NC State/Wake Forest game, once I find out what channel it's on.

UPS says the computer should be delivered tomorrow.... but I'll be at work, so I might have to go pick it up from wherever it is the UPS pick up center is.
Today, headed out and picked up a couple things from Best Buy - USB 1 gig hard drive and a USB wireless eithernet card, which should rock.
In non computer news, watched American Idol tonight with this girl, Keisha, that I met over the past weekend. Fun to hang out, although she'll be out of town for the weekend, which means I'll have to wait to make plans for next week...
But, I need to hit the hay, see you folks later.

| » Back to the Grind |
Weekend is over and the work week begins. Had an excellent time over the weekend, on a couple levels. Finally put an order in for a new computer!! So, if all goes well with Dell, it should arrive later on this week. 17" flat screen, 160 gig HD, 2.8ghz processor, 512 megs of RAM, it should be fantastic. On Saturday, headed out to Amos' Southend with Kirk, Shelly, Kendra, Angela and a few others. Breakfast CLub was playing, & Dead or ALive ( fake Bon Jovi) opened for them. Huge crowd and an excellent show. Spend Sunday pretty much being lazy, although my room is now cleaned & looking good for a change. We'll see if that keeps up. Also met a girl at Amos' this weekend, so we'll see if that leads anywhere. Always being optimistic, of course!
At any rate, I better head off to check the pizza in the oven, so I can eat!!

| » Post B-Day |
23 is so two days ago. It's all about the 24 now. Had myself a birthday yesterday, ended up over at the Dilworth Grille to hang out with friends and, as the original plan was, watch State beat UNC. Well, the basketball game was a total and utter failure, but at least the hanging out went pretty well. Shelly was nice enough to bring an ice cream cake, which was tasty and between her and Kirk I picked up some dried apples, Guiness and JOURNEY, 2 discs of awesomeness. Angie figured if I was turning 24, that 24 Guiness would make a great gift, so I'm pretty good on beer now. Great to see everyone out, Frazier, Brett, Jon, Katie, Angela, Angie, Shelly, Kirk, Brett's friend Ben, and Kirk's friend this guy whom I've met 7 times but can't remember his name. Few folks couldn't make it, but I'm a caring and understanding kinda guy. They'll just have to make it up to me with a few hours of slave labor.
MY BACK IS BEING REALLY ANNOYING. Went running on Wednesday, outside, with Jon and a Y-fitness person, 3.5 miles. And my back started hurting cause I am not used to all the up hills and down hills nonsense. So, now I need to run and start doing some Ab & Lower back workouts or I'm not going to be able to get out of bed one morning. Still, overall, my running is doing better. This "Runditioning" class is going to start doing the actual 5K route soon, so hopefully I'll be able to get a good feel. I do like Shelly's idea of running the race in a business suit and with a briefcase (It's called the corporate cup) but I fear that I might die.
Other than that, after a few hundred dollars, my teeth are all fixed up, and I've learned my lesson about visits every 6 months. Bleh, at least now I have super cool perscription toothpaste, meaning now, before I go to bed, I: Listerine, Floss, Regular Toothbrush, Listerine whitening & perscription toothpaste. In theory, after a couple months, I should have the most amazing teeth on planet earth!

| » Chillin at the casa |
Ahhhhh, no more work for the day. Amazing how sometimes, everything you need to do all of a sudden arrives on the same day. Tomorrow, I'm going to be working like crazy to get everything done at the end of the day. No fear though, it shall be done. Stayed a little late to get a head start/make up for all this dentist time. Going back tomorrow to get a few fillings, so that'll suck a couple hours out of my day. I'm watching the recording of the US Women vs Canada in curling.... the USA is getting KILLED. 6-0 into the third frame/period whatever they call those things. Went out to Lavecchia's for a little post work Happy Hour for all those with nothing to do for Valentine's day. Pretty good crowd out there, actually, mostly folks who work with Kirk/Kendra/Shelly, including one poor guy whose wife had apparently asked for a divorce yesterday. Ouch. Went running today, but only made about 1.7 miles because my new shoes starting hurting my feet like crazy. Sure enough, I took the shoe off and I had a blister. Not a good sign for new shoes, so I headed back to Dick's tonight for a little exchange action. Got a nice pair of Nike Air Coos which should be an improvement, or at least, the people working there tonight seemed to think so. Far better than the complete lack of people in the shoe department when I got my first pair on Saturday.
Also, thanks to the revelation of the dentist visit, looks like I'm through with drinks with a lot of sugar for awhile. So it's Sobe Lean and Diet Dr. Pepper for Jay now. Stupid teeth failing me once again. I was not blessed with strong and mighty teeth. The weekend should be pretty fun, lots of people are wanting to go out, apparently there are going to be a lot of friends coming into town for the weekend, and I say the more the merrier for the ol' birthday weekend.
